He will be used to working on a very small budget and when I saw them last they played attractive passing football, when all our defenders are fit we could play the same way in front of what is a decent defence, apart from the odd lapse at set pieces. There are worse choices out there, although there are better ones, but I wouldn't complain if he did get the job, at least he could score goals."

Darren Purse applies for Oxford United job

Darren Purse has become the latest former Oxford United player to apply for the vacant manager's position.

The 36-year-old's CV has been sent into the club, joining ex-U's Dean Windass and David Rush, who wants to be considered for a coaching role, in the process.

Purse has his UEFA 'A' licence and is studying for a Diploma of Football Management at St George's Park in Burton.

The centre back joined Calor League Premier Division side Chesham United last month after a spell playing in Finland with IFK Mariehamn.

Purse made 72 appearances for United before moving to Birmingham City in a £700,000 deal in February 1998.
