Seem to recall the bumpkins from down the road having quite a bit of success when they appointed a previously untried manager on a couple of occasions. So there is no harm in appointing someone new to management as long as there is the support for them in the form of an experienced head alongside them. Whilst it is nice to see ex-players putting themselves forward for the job, it is not a route I particularly want to see us going down - past experience has proven disappointing. The only exceptions to that would be ex-players with experience of taking clubs forward and there aren't too many of them available at the moment. And the only notable ones I can think of are Brian McDermott and David Penney - can't see either of them wanting the job.
the lot from down the road also put themselfs ino a financial mess at the same time. High profile names will want to rip the team apart and spend spend spend!!"

Darren Purse has become the latest former Oxford United player to apply for the vacant manager's position.

The 36-year-old's CV has been sent into the club, joining ex-U's Dean Windass and David Rush, who wants to be considered for a coaching role, in the process.

Purse has his UEFA 'A' licence and is studying for a Diploma of Football Management at St George's Park in Burton.

The centre back joined Calor League Premier Division side Chesham United last month after a spell playing in Finland with IFK Mariehamn.

Purse made 72 appearances for United before moving to Birmingham City in a £700,000 deal in February 1998.
