  • "Can we get Promotion with Mickey Lewis and Nigel Melville running things? Or will not appointing a Permanent man be a costly mistake? I know the club didn't sack CW but surely as he had been told the play offs were the least expected, not to go for it now would be suicide. At least we are an attractive proposition whilst we are 5th, but to a guy looking for a club in the close season, if we are still in Division 4 we won't be anywhere near as attractive."

AN ABILITY to bring through young talent will be a key attribute for candidates looking to become the next Oxford United manager

The process to find Chris Wilder’s replacement is under way, although a quick appointment is unlikely, with the board believed to favour a thorough interview process, similar to when they handed Wilder the job in 2008.

Chairman Ian Lenagan is keeping an open mind over whether they make a permanent appointment, or operate with an interim boss until the end of the season.

But there are certain strengths the U’s require.

Chief among these will be a commitment to promote talent from within.

Lenagan said: “I think the principles of the strategies that I and my board have for Oxford United are well known.

“We certainly would want a manager who espouses those strategies.”
