FOOTBALL: City denied first win by deflection
11:24pm Tuesday 17th September 2013 in Headlines
OXFORD City were denied their first win of the season in the cruellest of circumstances as they had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Boston United.
City took the lead a minute into stoppage time when Tom Winters fired home from 15 yards, but Boston hit back two minutes later via Ian Ross’s deflected free-kick.
The hosts may have settled for a point against their high-flying opponents beforehand, but they left Boston full of frustration.
Winters blasted over when well-placed in the first half, while Spencer Weir Daley wasted a good chance for Boston.
City led when Winters finished well after the referee played a good advantage for a foul on Adam Learoyd.
But Ross’s free-kick took a wicked deflection off the wall and left City keeper Victor Francoz wrong-footed.
Oxford City: Francoz, Clifton, Stonehouse, Pond, Henderson, Wilmott, Williams (Benjamin 78), Malone, Symonds (Learoyd 87), McNish (Cook 76), Winters. Subs not used: Basham, Scott.
Referee: Constantine Hatzidakis.
