Chris Wilder is now the third longest-serving manager with one club in English football’s top four divisions following Greg Abbott’s dismissal by Carlisle United yesterday.
The winless Cumbrians made the decision following Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat by Port Vale, which kept them in Sky Bet League One’s bottom four.
Wilder took over as Oxford United manager in December 2008, less than a month after Abbott’s appointment at Brunton Park.
Only Arsene Wenger at Arsenal and Exeter City’s Paul Tisdale have been in their posts longer than the U’s boss.
Graham Kavanagh, Abbott’s assistant, has been put in temporary charge and is the early favourite to take over permanently.
