JOHNNY Mullins hailed Oxf-ord United’s character as they recovered from letting a lead slip to beat Bury.
The centre back struck the winner from a set-piece routine ten minutes from time, much to the relief of the home fans at the Kassam Stadium.
United led through Danny Rose’s free-kick before the break, before Bury went on to become the better side after half-time.
There was little surprise when Tom Soares duly equalised, but it spurred the home side into action.
Mullins was thrilled to claim the 2-1 victory, which took United top of the table.
He said: “I couldn’t have asked for a better start and I’m chuffed to bits to get the winner.
“But the three points was the most important thing.
“It was a hard game, they came here to put the spoilers on it and they did it, but I think we showed strength of character to win the game after being disappointed with their goal.
“I think there are a lot of winners in the team.
“At Portsmouth we went a goal down in that environment and we came back to win 4-1 and against Bury we showed it again.”
Mullins admitted it was frustrating United were unable to stem the flow of Bury chances in the second half, which shows there is room for improvement.
He said: “We couldn’t get ourselves into it until after the goal, when we bucked our ideas up a bit. “That’s something we’ll look at, we have to start the second half better.
“In your first home game of the season you want to win and put on a good performance for your fans. “You want to make this a hard place for teams to come. “That’s our intention so all you can do is win, it doesn’t matter how you do it. “We want to be improve and we’ll strive to get better in every game because that’s the only way we’ll achieve what we want this season.”
The 27-year-old scored twice in eight games on loan at United last season, on his way to a career-best tally of six.
“It’s just about attacking the ball,” he said.
“I feel I can be a threat and if not hopefully I can take a big marker out of the way. “I just want to get as many goals as possible to help the team win games.”
