Wingers backed to make Oxford United impact
The teenagers were thrown in at the deep end, starting in the Capital One Cup tie at Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night.
Although the U’s lost 4-0, the pair of wingers were highlights.
While Williams, 19, had previous experience at Portsmouth and has spent the last year and a half at Fulham, it was the 18-year-old O’Dowda’s first taste of senior football.
Wilder was delighted to see one of the club’s youth team graduates perform on a big stage and although both are likely to drop out of the XI tomorrow, the U’s boss now knows both can contribute.
He said: “We know they have handled coming to a Championship club and can be fully pleased with their performances and debuts.
“It’s a massive step for Callum, he’s come from youth football against the local sides and all of a sudden he’s stepping into players that have played Championship football.
“He will learn from that and get better. But it’s good now we know we have a couple of players that can handle our level.
“We know they will be able to cause problems and help us out in our quest for promotion.”
