Broad Chalke WI
8:09am Wednesday 23rd January 2013 in Barclays Premier League
THE December meeting opened on a sombre note with a minute’s silence in memory of Joan Moore who died recently.
Joan had been a WI member for many years, serving on the committee and at the age of 80 becoming president.
There followed entertainment by Vera Hughes and David Weller, a versatile couple of actors whose subject was the 17th century gossip John Aubrey.
It being the festive season we were happy to welcome several guests who enjoyed drinks & nibbles after the performance.
In the first meeting of 2013, after wishing us a happy new year, the president, Sue Fry, thanked Liz for her flowers and Jenny and her helpers who had served refreshments during the Forest Forge performance.
A variety of forthcoming events were announced to drive away the winter blues, including a theatre outing.
The institute is to enter the Three Valleys competition, which is based on the theme of nursery rhymes, in particular the Queen of Hearts.
Any cooking, sewing or other items to form the exhibit would be welcome.
See Sue for further details.
The Skittles team have played six matches, won three, lost two and drawn one.
The speaker, Julie James is a ship’s visitor.
She covers an area around Poole and Southampton and goes aboard ships of all types to see if the crews, mostly foreign, are in need of warm clothing, books, papers or spiritual comfort.
She told us she hands out as many as 1,000 woolly hats a week.
Next month we hope to welcome Marianne Tomkies, celebrated choir mistress.
The meeting will be on February 20 at 7.30pm in the village hall.
