Our weekly column with Oxford United’s managing director Greig Box Turnbull on the latest news from in and around club

MOST football clubs, bar the global elite, face battles to operate on a sustainable basis.

Many overly rely on a wealthy donor to survive. And it’s no different at Oxford United.

Despite record season ticket sales, stronger retail and commercial revenue streams, cup runs and some success in the transfer market, we remain loss making.

Sustainability has been a hot topic this week, following the board’s statement regarding the stadium.

The club is significantly restricted by the stadium straitjacket we are in.

It’s vital a way forward is found to ensure the club is healthier and able to compete, rather than go backwards.

Operating the stadium would make a major difference to the club’s wellbeing, on many levels.

We would be able to generate vital revenue and improve the facilities.

Parts of the stadium are deteriorating and our supporters deserve better when attending United matches.

Some fans have asked why the board issued the statement.

Our concern is if it potentially takes from October to May to arrive at non-binding heads of terms, it could take years to conclude the deal.

We cannot wait that long. The status quo is not sustainable.

The key theme of our message is: the time is now.

It’s time for Firoz Kassam to show his pledge in October was genuine.

It’s time to do the right thing.

Our heartfelt call to Firoz Kassam and Oxford City Council to fast-track the deal with OxVox remains, for the good of the club and the county we serve.
