AFC Wimbledon go into tomorrow’s clash with Oxford United on the cusp of their best season.

The Dons are on 54 points, level with the haul they managed as Football League debutants in 2011-12, finishing 16th.

In the two previous campaigns they have finished 20th on 53 points, so have both the club’s best points haul and highest finish in their sights.

A 4-0 thumping at Dagenham & Redbridge on Easter Monday also ensures Wimbledon will not be short of motivation when they face United.

Neal Ardley, Dons manager, said: “I have a lot of players who will be out of contract and are playing for their futures.

“We do not want the fans to watch a team that is just seeing the season out.

“There are a lot of big clubs below us and clubs fighting for their lives and we are not one of those.

“We should not take that for granted.

“We will push as hard as we can and see if we can get our highest placed finish.

“We want to move into the top-12 and see if we can get 60 points-plus.

“We will keep driving the players hard for that.”

The Dons claimed a goalless draw in the reverse fixture at the Kassam Stadium in November, which was the first time they had avoided defeat against United.

The U’s have won their four trips to Kingsmeadow without conceding a goal.
