CHERWELL LEAGUE

Division 1

GREAT & Little Tew stormed to the top of the table with a fortnight of the season to go after they won while morning leaders Horspath had their match cut short by rain.

With thundery showers spreading across the region, Tew scored at more than five runs an over to wrap up a seven-wicket win at Buckingham Town and establish a four-point lead at the summit.

Town had been bowled out for 151 after Sam Keegan made 61 and Matt Woods took 3-42.

Ed Gross then smashed 56 not out in Tew’s 152-3, which came from only 28.3 overs.

Horspath would surely have beaten bottom club Bletchley Town had the match not been interrupted and then called off due to the wet weather.

The hosts had raced to 234-3 from only 44 overs, thanks first to Jimmy Phillips (75) and then Shahbaz Ali (85no).

Town were in trouble on 34-3 from 17 overs when no further play was possible.

Only a bizarre set of results in the final two weeks will prevent Bletchley spending next summer in Division 2.

Oxford & Bletchingdon Nondescripts almost certainly need to win both their remaining fixtures to have a chance of staying up after collecting only three points at home to Banbury 2nd.

Jonny Cater (72no), Andrew Sabin (37) and Steve Beck (34) helped the visitors reach 225-7 from 45.1 overs when a shower took the players off the field.

Alex Davis (4-91) and Mark Strong (3-82) had been the pick of the home attack.

Steve Hart then took 3-2 to help reduce Nondies to 59-7 from 24 overs.

Rain stopped play just as the match between Great Brickhill and Oxford Downs was bubbling to an exciting finish.

Downs had looked down and out after being rolled over for 136 from 29 overs. Garth Davson took 6-42 as only Wes Bartlett (32) hung around.

Greg MacDonald (36) and Doug Aris (30) looked like winning the game for Brickhill, but Daryl Johnson took 3-9 to leave them on 127-7 from 37.3 overs when the rain came.

Leighton Buzzard Town batsman Chris Thompson brought up his 100, but missed out on the chance to add to his score as his side’s match at Cumnor did not make it to the halfway stage.

Tom Scott had also batted well for his 51, but the umpires called a halt with Town on 193-5 from 32.3 overs.
