CRICKET: Oxford march on in style

Oxford eased to an eight-wicket win at Tring Park in the Cockspur National Twenty/20 first round.

Tring were bowled out for 142 after winning the toss and deciding to bat.

Keith Dutch hit 51 from 37 balls, but Oxford’s attack held the hosts in check with Ian Evans taking 3-33.

Nick Ferraby, with 51 not out from 41 balls, and Stewart Laudat, with 48 off 33 balls, then set Oxford on the way to victory with three overs to spare, Ian Crosby weighing in with 29 not out.

Now Oxford are at home to Horspath on Thursday, June 10 after they crushed Buckingham by six wickets.

Young leg-spinner Dan Todd starred on his first-team debut with 4-26 as Buckingham were 96 all out.

Horspath cruised to 98-4 with 5.2 overs to spare.

Craig Haupt hammered a half-century in Banbury’s victory over Cumnor.

They are now at home to Aston Rowant, who were handed a walkover by Beaconsfield.

AUSTRALIAN Alister Gibbins has relinquished his position as Horspath coach.

The Tasmanian, who is ineligible for the MP Sports Cherwell League as he is over 22, will remain a playing member with his opportunities limited to the Thames & Chilterns Sunday League.

Just heard that Horspath are under investigation for Paying players, is that why their Aussie quit as coach? Seems a little odd to me.

I can't believe that any club in the league would pay their players after the warning from the league this year. Is winning really that important?

Especially a non playing coach, a little bit bizzare to me. It goes on, we are not stupid. I know that even my local club pay players, a kiwi left arm bowler in fact. Why don't they use the money on developing youngsters? My son could do with some coaching, why don't they put it towards the future?

Win at all costs Nicked Out I would imagine, but I am not going to speculate on rumours. We all know that clubs pay players, but innocent until proven guilty and all that.

sec word, girl-that, didn't fancy the high catch then?

Just a couple of points. Though I love a bit of banter, ANYONE who knows local cricket at all would know that out of all the teams in this league, Horspath are probably the most unlikeliest of teams to pay anyone. They are a great club who a lot of players and clubs envy due to their success and club ethos. Play hard, then always socialise with the opposition unlike some clubs. I for one enjoy playing against them, I think your clutching at straws for a bit of banter and hope that the ACTUAL teams who are paying, get busted!

You're spot on there, slips, from what I know and understand of CL cricket from my hubby who's in the know so to speak.

Our Banbury friend is playing and missing me thinks, and not even nicking one, on this front.

I'm telling you now, this is no joke. Money has changed hands at these clubs, and it needs to stop. Just because Horspath have great people, and socialise after the game, does that necessarily mean that they are not guilty? Gibbons has been told to stand down from coaching until the investigation passes.

This level of speculation gets me down...yawn. I'm with slips on this one 100%.

Who really cares??

Horsepath cc - lets be fair their not going places - and from what I have read and heard are top lads enjoying their saturday cricket. If they want an average aussie let them have it - when did the cherwell league get so xenophobic? next it will be only white teams aloud - its completely bizarre. Has anyone really heard of this tasmanian devil? is he really that good - answer - Average joe's gym!!

I look forward to seeing the next Cherwell League Minutes, the complete absence of any mention of this so called "investigation" and an apology from our Banbury correspondent....!

Forget all this nonsense about paying players and coaches, lets move on... Any comments now on the new spreadsheet sent out by the CL for end of season averages. I am familar with complex spreadsheets but this might stretch the non user....

Cricket Fan, my hubby works in IT - and our neighbour shared the spreadsheet with us last evening (it's that kind of wild place, Wolvercote, you know!) - and it's fair to say he's not a happy camper having spent the first 5 weeks of this season honing his own masterpiece of statistical gathering..........

Anyone with half a brain could complete that spreadsheet, which rules out the contributers to this column.

Does it not say that Gibbons cannot play in the league anyway? What is wrong with a club having a guy come over and coach? Paid or not! Surely having someone from a different background and view on cricket can only benefit the young players at the club?

Dave

Good to see you back, like your summary of the CL. I think Nicked Out has got a sore back.

Barlow will enjoy your comments.

Chaps (and chapesses) really, come on now! Some of you should get out of your bedroom and watch some cricket, or at least take a pint at your local club, otherwise stick to Facebook.
Cherwell Dave, your eloquence is as evident as a sober body in The Palace nightclub on a Saturday night, so I am afraid your views are immediately discounted.
WALOB and PitV (especially on nicked), your views are more rational - keep it up. Arnie, spot on - where do these guys get the connection between players and coaches? If horspath are paying Gibbons, what does it matter as he does not play?
Still, should keep the CL league committee for a bit now that they have clamped a Soviet style rule on every other aspect of a Saturday afternoon cricket match.

Oh Carol don't be such a fool
Cherwell Dave knows so make more than you
He'll play with you and make you cry
Oh Carol you are out of your depth tonight

Aha, a clique, a gang, a message that I am not welcome here, in the world of the one-eyed villagers.
Is that meant to be poetry VftB, with its underlying tone of violence?
From my angle it is unsubstantiated codswallop. Where's the benchmark for knowing more than me, not that I care as it is up to the other viewers of these pages to decide? Less menace, more humour please.
I'm off to buy some tissues in expectation of the impending predicted lachrymal crisis.........

My issues from what I have seen

1) Poor standard of pitches
2) Awful Cricket balls
3) Short game with a draw option - so old school
5) Ability to bowl whole innings - breeds medium dobbers and non spinning spinners
4) Not understanding key role of overseas players - i.e should have at least a level 2 cricket coaching award and be highly involved in youth set up.
5) So many past it, unfit, poor role model cricketers. I agree its recreational but such a hugh volume of guys carrying food babies.
6) Young players with good techniques not recognised due to their inability to dominate on low slow horror decks.
7) Money given to people who don't leave a legacy at the club.

My recommendatino to any young oxon player - go to a Oxford CC, Banbury, Aston Rowant, Henley, Thame type club.

Dave I tend to agree. We try to develop our youngsters and let them find their way to the big boys. I see my role as putting back what I took for so many years and find it so rewarding. I never got paid, but played at a level similar to you but always enjoyed a good tea.

Nearly right Dave, it is about balance, Leginio has a point. The answer is that your list of clubs needs to be longer. But young players need to play with good players and good captain, with that I do agree.

I have just read all of the above and I am not sure sure where nicked out gets his information from??? Horspath have got more than enough good players and people involved at the club who are there for the love of the club, and not to "win at all costs". And, davecherwell, continious promotions in the last few years suggests to me Horspath are going places...

everyone keeps on that the Cherwell has odd rules, and and isn't great cricket, but i'v ejust seen that the OCA are allowing clubs to start at 1230 on saturday so they can make the football, OR play a 35 over match starting at 2pm - how on earth can you let teams play a different format of the game on the same day?????
