CRICKET: Tudor rejects Oxfordshire approach

Former England fast bowler Alex Tudor has turned down the offer to play for Oxfordshire.

The 32-year-old had been offered a player-coach role by the Minor Counties side following his release by Surrey.

“Long deliberation and thought went into the decision,” he said. “The travelling was just going to be too much.

“I'm going to be playing club cricket in Nottingham on Saturday and the games for Oxfordshire start on Sunday. A lot of those are in the West Country.”

He added: “Something closer to home has come to fruition for the earlier part of the week which means I can spend more time with my daughter.

“The decision I came to wasn't easy. Speaking to the Oxfordshire committee they were obviously very keen, but I will have to decline.”

Tudor played ten Tests for England between 1998 and 2002, but saw his career blighted by a string of injuries.

As a bowler he took 220 first-class wickets at an average of 28.41 during two spells at Surrey.

Phew, that was a close call. If ****ing money up the wall was part of the Oxfordshire County Cricket constitutional requirements having Alex Tudor would've been a perfect way to do it.

Agreed. They should thank their lucky stars they have been saved from their own incompetence.

Oh no, does that mean that the money will have to be spent developing young players instead?

I heard that Chris Lewis is out on parole soon, why not give him a ring! Same sort of player as Tudor but if its a hot day they will have to make sure he doesnt burn his head again!!!

What a joke, why would you bother in the first place? Is Oxfordshire really struggling that much? Surely they will keep Arnie playing for at least another 5 years!

i think all the players should come from the OCA or CHerwell league.

I mean the cricket just brings on such well balanced players.

so many fast bowlers, big turners, talented front doggers

lets be honest, are oxfordshire a stronger team now than they were pre hcpl. the mind boggles would the current crop be stand out players in div 1,2 of the cherwell.

It seems you guys have alot to say in putting down the idea of getting Alex Tudor, saying he is a waste of money, but no real reasons as to why.
This money would be a great way to develop the young cricketers coming through. Having a guy that has Tudors record and knowledge can only mean good things for young players as long as they want to learn and extract knowledge from him.

i believe that the players are much better. How can they not be? They are playing against the best club plays across 3 counties rather than just the one. THe reason that oxfordshire didnt magically become best minor county since the HCPL has been introduced, is due to the introduction of regional premier league across the country for which players for the minor counties are predominatly picked. The standard on the whole will have improved.

On the whole the players playing for oxfordshire would be the top players in the cherwell league, that in my mind goes without saying. Tuffers Fan Club, you tell me who in the oxfordshire side would not do well in the cherwell league?!

Frankly I couldn't care less about who plays for Oxfordshire and where they come from, I have no interest in it, but it makes for good wumming. Anyway the way forward isn't to throw your money at a washed up old pro that is so injury prone that he might as well be made of biscuit. This has always been the problem with lower level cricket be it minor counties, hcpl, cherwell league. It is always about who has bought and brought the biggest dog to the fight. Not got the talent locally, lets just buy it in and try and look better than we actually are.

ok, so where are the seamers from the premier league, Banbury, Oxford, Thame, Rowant,Dinton. From those 5 teams alone there must be between 10&15 or are they not to the required standard, (Still pondering) they cant all be overseas!!

From what i can see all these teams now struggle for seamers. Oxford did have both Stuart Hole & Jack Brooks but with Jack now at Northants they don't have alot. Banbury look as though the overseas is vital to their bowling. Rowant depend on Morrick & as for Thame that is a seamers grave yard.
All the HCPL & Cherwell sides play limited over cricket so can get away without bowlers to a certain degree but Minor Counties is 3 day cricket & to win games you have to bowl the opposition out & to do that you need good talented bowlers not just medium pace dobbers who enjoy low slow wickets.

sorry coach 111thats garbage must be the same all over the country with limited over cricket, not quite getting your point, you say Thame is a seamers grave yard ok, There are better tracks in div 1 & 2 of the cherwell with far more pace and bounce than our prem teams play on every other week white post & rover thats a fact and thats in house.

TFC - Where are these seamers in the Cherwell League? I think this question was asked a few weeks ago & no one came up with any names other than an overses at Great Tew & the chap Mason at Horspath.

it appears to get selected you have to move to either oxf or ban so the guys with a bit of loyalty to there cherwell clubs dont stand a chance. unless the selectors look a little deeper this problem will be around for a good while yet.

I played in the Cherwell League when it was the best league available to local players but i am afraid that times have moved on with the introduction of the Premier League & like it or not the best players will/should always migrate to the top. That is life TFC!
However, TFC you continue to moan but fail to come up with any credible alternatives re players particularly bowlers.
I watch a fair bit of Cherwell cricket & haven't seen anyone to date who stands out from the rest.

tuffer's you're clearly someone who knows a lot about cricket. Perhaps you should run everything!!!!!

In house? well I'm a slight sceptic on the fact that the cherwell league is as good as you say. The premier league division one is clearly of a very good standard. Division two i agree is litter.

as for the cherwell league - well lets not beat around the bush its clearly village sticks.

As perhaps you are as a player. As the great arnie would say " talk is cheap"

div 2 is litter, that phase just seem familiar to me from somewhere!

It is well known around cricket that the game at club and minor counites level is struggling for seamers. As soon as someone who can bowl something close to a good seam up ball they are given a deal and then either make it or get messed around by the county and hate the game afterwards (normally the latter). So either way they aren't around to wheel away week in week out against clubbies such as 'tuffers fan club' rating themselves playing down in the cherwell league.

I am afraid to say that when i played in the Cherwell League it was the top league in the county & we played against all the county players. It did make you realise that actually, they were better than we were. Perhaps the formation of the HCPL has taken the opportunity away of playing against these boys who quite clearly are the best we have.
I used to think i could play but at the end of the day the best players will always rise to the top & i accept now that i wasn't one of them.
Come on TFC accept it.
