CRICKET: Umpires could snub Rowant

Umpires on the Home Counties Premier League panel may refuse to stand at Aston Rowant next season.

A number of officials are threatening a boycott of matches at Butts Way in the wake of last year’s brawl between Rowant’s Tim Miles and Basingstoke & North Hants’ Dean Nurse.

The issue is due to be discussed at a panel meeting on Thursday night and umpires’ chairman John Reed said there was some ill feeling.

“I’ve spoken to umpires who will not officiate at Aston Rowant this season,” said Reed. “There are umpires who feel that the behaviour of Aston Rowant was not in the spirit of cricket.”

Reed said umpires were upset at the way Rowant had appealed against the league’s punishment for the brawl.

In particular, there were concerns about Rowant’s criticism of the two umpires.

Reed said: “Umpires are thinking ‘do I want to got to Aston Rowant and get my report torn apart if there is a disciplinary problem?’ “I am sure there will be enough umpires to fulfil the games, but there is certainly some very strong feeling on the panel.”

Rowant chairman Gary Condon declined to comment.

Utter nonsense!

Aston Rowant have an enormous penalty hanging over their head and relelgation would be almost guaranteed should they misbehave.

I would have thought that they would have a pleasant afternoon over there. Maybe its Mr Reed who is trying to cover up for the committees 'balls-up' over the penalty which was imposed in the first place?

It would be nice if some local umpires came out in support of Rowant here, If there were a track record of bad behaviour or Umpires had not been made to feel welcome in the past this would be understandable but this is not the case. Ok Power, understand the teas are not up to your high standards but that is all ! Come on the white coats, lets see a bit of balance here!

If umpires carry out this puerile threat it will be a disgrace. This whole saga was created by the HCPL committee shambolic mishandling of a fairly simple process and Aston Rowant were well within their rights to contest the disciplinary penalties handed down. If it was handled correctly in the first place none of these problems would exist. Umpires getting involved in the dispute (which has been resloved now) at this stage only serves to make themselves look ridiculous and getting involved in something that has no bearing on their own organisation. I understand the reason behind this ie they feel the integrities of the standing umpires in that game were called into question, however, it was with valid points that the ARCC appeal was heard and overturned and the matter should now be allowed to rest and normal service be resumed

Steps, the teas at rowant are beyond reproach. One of the finest buffet lounges in the whole league..

Good to read all the usual suspects who always seem to have an opinion on everything. Sadly none of you know all the facts on this affair. Still, it's good to know after a fight on the field there is a great tea waiting for you.

Bouncer, in my opinion you are a cretin. The facts (all of them) are known completely, not just the report in the paper. One plus point in this however, is that Basingstoke are going to a different league and other teams can put up with Dean Nurse from now on

Why don't people just get on with it ,something happened,Rowant kicked the fella out of the club, they got docked points, they then did what everybody would have done, it got overturned, end of story. This umpire stuff is just garbage ,its a shame though that Basingstoke have moved leagues as their ground was just about the best in the Home Counties League.

Bit sad really. Expectations of John Reed were higher than this. The umpires need a leader not another shop steward.

Get on with it!

The hangover from this and the bagpipes affair raises some interesting issues. Were the umpires criticised for not nipping the sledging in the bud before things got out of hand or for the way they reacted or reported it... and so where do they go from here. Do they stamp on player comments or let the captains deal with it(in which case it could get over the top again). I am sure the players would like to self -police this but the captains and umpires need to get together to form a consistent approach.

Personally I think it is not Rowants fault. The league should have relegated them full stop. By allowing this appeal they have opened the floodgates for all the thugs that play cricket for Rowant to have a field day, then afterwards get off of any punishment on appeal.
