Cumnor hope to make Sunday's npower Village Cup first national round clash with Cranborne a big event on and off the field.

Oxfordshire champions Cumnor host Dorset & Wilts winners Cranborne confident they can progress further.

But they want to do so with as much local support as they can muster.

"There will be an all-day barbecue and one of our members has paid for a special programme to be printed," said captain Carl Thompson.

"Cranborne are really looking forward to it as well.

"It would be be great to see as many people there as possible.

"Oxford Downs have said they will come and some from Horspath should be there as well."

Cumnor make one change to the side that defeated Horspath in a memorable Oxfordshire final.

Shahbaz Alam is ruled out following a motorbike accident, with Steve Slade or Martin Hunter set to come in.

As for their prospects, Thompson said: "The Oxfordshire final was big.

"This one will be different because we don't really know anything about the opposition.

"They are a very small village, but we are taking the game seriously.

"They may be a lower league side than us, but one player can take a game away from you."

"It would be a big anti-climax to fall at the first national hurdle after winning the Oxfordshire group.

"Every game we've played, we've chased a total and that's proved successful.

"Our pitch is well-known as one of the best batting pitches around.

"If the weather is good, then we may consider batting first."

If victorious, Cumnor will host either Marshfield or Stapleton in the last 16.

Looking ahead, a potential quarter-final would see Cumnor travel to Wales or Cornwall.

Cumnor: from Scott, Nielson, Gaunt, Morteza, Douglas, Kirsten, Umair Ghazali, Thompson (capt), Slade, Ayaz Khan, Mitty, Hunter.

I care ZZZzzz as a follower of Cranborne Cricket Club who will be travelling to Oxfordshire on Sunday I want to be assured that we will not be playing against a team of ringers or illegible players. What does Sayitlikeitis mean by saying the players do not belong to Cumnor Cricket Club

Crane - sounds like sour grapes to me. I know most of the Cumnor players they certainly wouldn't break the rules. A nice bunch lads - You will have a great day at CCC - Best of luck.

cumnor is a great club, it has great members and non of the players would ever 'cheat' i think that everyone in the county who enjoys cricket should come along and support iwill be COME ON CUMNOR

Confused, not sour grapes from me and I certainly wasn't suggesting that anyone was cheating I was just concerned at what was being implied by the earlier comments. I wouldn't expect all the players to be born and bred in the village either. We are really looking forward to coming to Cumnor on Sunday and meeting you guys. Lets hope for good weather and an entertaining game

Have I touched a nerve here? Did I say the players were illegible? No. Did I say they were ringers? No. Did I mean they weren't born in the village? No.
I meant that some of the faces that turn out for Cumnor in the village cup are not ever seen playing in the league for Cumnor. I'm suggesting that they possibly are former players which isn't against the rules providing that sits ok with you ethically.
Good luck to both 'teams'. Personally, I'm looking forward to the bbq!

I would hate to think that comments on here are stirring up bad feeling before the game, Cranes loon, sayitlikeitis has explained what was meant by his initial comment and my initial concerns have been allayed. I'm sure the game will be played in a good spirit and like sayitlikeitis I too am looking forward to the barbie.
