JACK Brooks says he will have to raise his game further to take full advantage of his England Lions call-up.

The Yorkshire paceman, who hails from Tiddington, was yesterday named in England’s second team squads to face South Africa A in January and February.

Brooks, who came through the ranks with Oxfordshire, is in both the first class and 50-over groups after a stellar season with Yorkshire.

“Hopefully, I can make the most of it,” he said.

“I did quite well last time with the Lions, but I will probably have to do better if I am to force my way into the senior team.

“Hopefully, I can stay fit and keep taking wickets and get this little villager into the England squad.”

Brooks, 30, played for England Lions three years ago, but has had his best season yet, taking 71 wickets as Yorkshire won the LV= County Championship.

“I wasn’t really surprised that I was in because I kind of knew I would be involved,” he said.

“I didn’t think they would pick me in the pre-Christmas sessions if I wasn’t going to make the squad.

“It’s going to be a tough winter, but I am really looking forward to it.

“I think I have earned my chance after last season.

“Having been involved a few years ago, I had kind of taken my eye off it, so to be involved again is a real bonus.”

Brooks’s highest profile teammate will be batsman Jonatahn Trott, who is looking to get back in the first team after overcoming mental health problems.

“He is a quality international cricketer and has done it for a long time,” said Brooks.

“It’s good to see him back involved.

“I know him from playing against him a few times and it will be good to have him around and learn from him.”
