LUKE Ryan claimed five wickets, but there was little else for Oxfordshire to cheer about on the first day of the Unicorns Counties Championship final against Cumberland in Carlisle.

They trail the Eastern Division champions by 85 runs and are 0-1 in their second innings.

After the start was delayed by 45 minutes because of heavy dew, Oxon were inserted and dismissed for just 85 in 40.4 overs.

Hugo Darby and Harrison Ward put on 24 for the first wicket, before the former was bowled by Richard Gleeson.

Oxon then lost two wickets for 14 runs as Neil Longhurst dismissed Lloyd Sabin and Ward, restricting the visitors to 38-3.

Richard Kaufman, who top-scored with 17, and Jonny Cater steered Oxon to 51-3 at lunch but after they fell, Will Beer soon followed as the hosts took control.

A seventh-wicket partnership of 19 between Jack Wilkins and Chad Keegan was only a slight repreive as Oxon lost their last four wickets for two runs.

In reply, Cumberland's openers William Hale and Josh Tolley put on 50 for the first wicket.

However, Ryan trapped Hale leg before wicket and Beer dismissed Michael Slack first ball as the hosts found themselves 51-2.

But Cumberland were in complete control as they passed Oxon's total without losing any further wickets.

Longhurst and Jonathan Miles combined with Tolley to put on third and fourth-wicket stands of 38 and 22 to steer the hosts to 111-4.

But after Harvey Eltham caught and bowled Tolley, and Beer bowled Miles, Oxon captain Ryan (5-37) took centre stage.

Cumberland lost their last five wickets for 24 runs, Ryan claiming four and Keegan the other, as they made 170 from 58.2 overs.

However, when Oxon took to the crease for a second time, nightwatchman Eltham was dismissed for a duck on the last ball of the day as they closed on 0-1.
