Former Oxfordshire paceman Jack Brooks made a flying start to the new LV County Championship season with Northants by claiming a five-wicket haul on the opening day against Derbyshire at Derby.

Brooks,who began his career with Tiddington, finished with 5-61 as he helped bowl out the home side for 286.

Dan Redfern held the Derbyshire innings together with 110, his maiden first-class century.

Bowling from the Racecourse End with a stiff northerly breeze at his back, Brooks took 3-17 in five overs, including New Zealand Test opener Martin Guptill to reduce Derbyshire to 50-4.

He picked up two more wickets in the afternoon, including that of Ross Whiteley for 83, to complete his five.

Brooks was playing in his first match on home soil after returning from a successful tour to Sri Lanka with England Lions.

* Seamer Owain Jones claimed a hat-trick as MCC Oxord Universities thrashed Southampton Solent by 197 runs in the BUCS at Southampton.

Charlie Walker made 97 and Ben Walker 52 in Oxford’s 50-over total of 272-7 and then Jones dismissed Solent for just 75 in the 24th over.

He finished with figures of 5-20.
