Emotions will be running high at Ascot tomorrow if Somersby can land the Sodexo Clarence House Chase – a day after Terry Biddlecombe’s funeral.

The ten-year-old was trained by Biddlecombe’s widow, Henrietta Knight, at West Lockinge, near Wantage, before her retirement in 2012 when he moved to close friend Mick Channon’s West Ilsley yard.

Biddlecombe, who died on January 5, will be buried at a private family funeral at Holy Trinity Church, Ardington, today.

And tomorrow, Somersby will attempt to repeat his success of two years ago in the corresponding race when he provided Knight with her last Grade 1 triumph.

Channon said: “He is in great form and we will go there and give it our best shot.”

Meanwhile, Biddlecombe is to be remembered by the last horse he was involved in buying being given the name that summed him up – The Last Cavalier.

The idea was inspired by the Racing Post’s front page headline following Biddlecombe’s death, with Channon reserving the name with Weatherbys.

It is to be given to an unraced half-brother to Racing Demon, one of Knight’s former stars.
