Formula 1 testing began this week, but there’s an exciting new championship due to start this year which I hope to raise funds to compete in.

It’s called Formula E and will see all the cars competing running exclusively on electric energy.

Yes, that’s right, electric energy!

It has the backing from the FIA and many celebrities, including Leonardo Dicaprio, who will have his own team running two cars in the championship.

The teams will have to manufacture and build their own cars, subject to the rules and regulations set out by the FIA.

The championship will start in September 2014 and run through to June 2015.

It will run on street tracks, racing in ten famous cities around the world, including Los Angeles, Monaco, Miami, Beijing and London.

What makes it even more exciting is that the race will be an hour long and the drivers will have to make two mandatory pit stops to change cars – not tyres, CARS!

The drivers will be expected to do more stops, as you are not allowed to replace tyres when changing car.

It will be run with a Spark-Renault SRT-01E engine and is the first electric car to be approved by the FIA.

McLaren Electronics Systems and Williams Advanced Engineering will provide the electrics and batteries respectively.

The power will be 200kw – the equivalent of 270bhp – with the car estimated to go from 0-62mph in three seconds.

There will also be a “push to pass” button available for a limited time.

It is going to be very interesting to see how this championship goes.

The technology they are using is more than likely going to be the future of Motorsport and to race in Formula E is something that I would love to be able to do this year.
