This is my final column from Perth and I cannot believe how quickly the time has flown by.

I’ve loved every minute and it’s been a very beneficial few months – both physically with the cricket and outdoor training as well as freshening up mentally by spending some time away from the daily routine in England.

It’s especially nice not to see same faces all day, every day.

Since I joined Willetton at the beginning of January, we have won every game.

Hopefully they can kick on after I have gone and win one of the two competitions.

They are in a 50-over final at the WACA which unfortunately I cannot stay around and be involved in as I’ll be in Sri Lanka with Yorkshire.

We won our semi-final on Sunday in a low-scoring clash.

It was a particular highlight for me as Brad Hogg, the Australian spin bowler, played for us.

I have known Hoggy since I first played at the club in 2004/5, but with his commitments with Australia, Western Australia and Perth Scorchers, this was the first time we had actually played together.

He is a great man and cares passionately, playing club cricket for Willetton even at the grand old age of 43.

We were bowled out for 169, with yours truly stranded as last man.

But we then proceeded to roll Mt Lawley over for 116, with Hoggy giving a masterclass and showing everyone why he was still performing at the highest level with 5-13 from his ten overs.

Brad is a cult hero in Western Australia and it’s hilarious seeing him gain so much attention from the media and general public.

I went to a Perth Wildcats basketball game with him where the attendance was approximately 12,000.

Hoggy had courtside tickets and the TV cameras were almost constantly on him like he was some sort of Hollywood A-lister.

In reality, he is just a down-to-earth country bumpkin!

This time next week I’ll be back in the mighty Oxfordshire, and the following week – fingers crossed – I’ll be writing from Colombo in Sri Lanka.

No doubt I have plenty to tell you about from those two locations. Tropical Tiddington particularly.

  • I’M elated that Yorkshire have made a massive signing in Aaron Finch.

I would say he is one of the biggest names in world T20 cricket and is as destructive a batsman as you will find in the modern game.

It’s going to be extremely exciting to see him take apart a few opposition bowlers this summer and no doubt his signing will help put a few more bums on seats at Headingley.

I’m glad he is on my team as I’m certain he would launch me out of the ground more often than not.

And that is probably exactly what will happen at training nets when he arrives.

I’ll keep you posted . . .
