AS far as the Ashes goes, it’s all been kicking off!

The media are getting stuck into it, the players are getting tasty with on and off-field chat and behaviour, and England got an absolute thumping, so it’s set up the series nicely in one way.

I was sad to see Jonathan Trott leave the tour, it’s never nice to hear of people, let alone professional sportsmen or women, suffering with depression.

It goes to show no matter how tough or strong you appear on the outside, you never know what’s going on inside.

I think the way Trott has been supported by the public, media and fellow professionals has been incredible and I’m sure he will appreciate it.

The hardest part for him would have been admitting he had an issue and felt unwell in the first place, so hopefully, his road to recovery starts now, and maybe one day we will see him back playing for Warwickshire and England.

Cricket has had a lot of attention with depression and mental health recently, what with Trescothick and Yardy both suffering similar issues to Trott. I think because of this, the knowledge and support us professionals have received has been fantastic.

I tend to get a bit down or emotional at times with personal or team performances, but that’s about as much as I have suffered, which is nothing in comparison to some.

However, I have played with a large number of teammates who regularly see a sports psychologist or have sought medical advice and even still take medication now as part of the issues they suffer.

Cricket is often seen as a bit of fun and a hobby to most people, but to the ‘lucky’ few that play professionally, it may not always be plain sailing.

The time spent away from the family or secure environment and pressures that go with continuous tours and high-profile matches, can eventually take its toll physically and mentally.

I think something like 120 ex-professional cricketers have committed suicide over the years and it’s extremely sad to think your dream job can actually have an adverse effect on your mental state.

At least now the support network is in place to help those who suffer.

ON a lighter note, the 2014 fixtures are out, with Yorkshire facing six games against my old side Northants and six against our Roses rivals Lancashire.

The first match I looked for is the away game v Middlesex to make sure we play at Lord’s – not the worst stadium and the best food around. Must make sure I’m fit for that one!
