LAUREN Hawtin completed the Apex Chiltern League season with a superb victory in the Division 1 under 15 girls’ race at Wing, Bucks.
In her first match of the season, held at Shotover Park in October, Hawtin finished more than a minute behind Rebecca Murray of Bedford & County in tenth place.
But such has been Hawtin’s improvement throughout the winter, she reversed that result, crossing the line in 11mins 56secs to finish 11 seconds ahead of Luton’s Rebecca Walcott-Nolan and 14 in front of Murray.
Imogen Kempton ran a tactically sound race to finish seventh, and with Elissa Clarke 16th and Rebecca Byren 18th, City finished second behind Bedford & County.
The result secured City the runners-up spot in the competition.
Beth Hawtin produced her best performance of the season as she finished second in the under 13 girls’ race.
Hawtin clocked 10.05 – just three seconds slower than winner Connie Lewis (Chiltern Harriers).
Storm Sunderland was seventh in 10.39 and Beth Mulvany 13th in 11.51 as City finished in sixth place in the race and a creditable seventh in the final standings.
In the senior competitions, Headington Roadrunners landed a fine team victory in the senior/veterans ladies’ race.
They were led home by Helen Barnes, who finished third in 23.42, with Jude Craft sixth, Frances Burge 11th and Charlotte Harris 14th.
The result left Headington in third place in the overall standings.
Oxford City’s men finished a distant 11th on the day and eighth in the final standings.
They were led home in 55th place by Trevor Dixon, who clocked 38.40.
In the Division 2 competition, Banbury Harriers posted a 1-2-3 in the senior/veterans ladies’ race.
Ros Kelling won the race in 24.35, with Julie Dixon second in 25.14 and Michelle Bartlett third in 25.24.
Radley’s George Miller won the under 17 boys’ race in 21.21, while in-form Christian von Eitzen clocked 11.18 to win the under 13 boys’ race.
