NATHAN Douglas was bitterly disappointed after failing to win a triple jump medal, writes STUART WEIR.

The Oxford City athlete had to settle for fifth place, after having four foul jumps in the Gold Coast.

Jumping into a headwind, the 35-year-old started with two leaps of 16.35 metres but then had four fouls in a row.

“I can’t tell you enough how disappointed I am not to be getting the gold medal,” he said.

The event was won by competition won by Troy Doris (Guyana) with 16.88.

“The mindset I came with, even if I had got silver or bronze I would have been disappointed,” he said.

“I couldn’t find the pattern of my runway.

“My coach kept saying, ‘this bit isn’t good, that bit isn’t good’ and I was trying to fix it.

“The fact that I was trying to fix it, says everything.

“You need it to be fluent. You need not to have to think about anything, ut just go.

“Sometimes I said:‘just run’, but I couldn’t catch it.

“So I struggled out there and I’m annoyed and frustrated because the gold was so winnable.”

But there was joy for Oxfordshire’s Stefanie Collins, who helped England claim a silver medal in the women’s

basketball.

The team captain, from Upper Heyford, contributed two points as they lost 99-55 to Australia

She said: “Australia are a world-class team.

“We knew going in that it was going to be an absolute battle.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this group of players. To put ourselves in a gold medal match speaks volumes.

“We challenged them right to the end so we can hold our heads high.

“I am ecstatic to have won a silver medal.

England’s rugby sevens team, captained by former Oxford University student, Tom Mitchell had to be satisfied with a bronze medal.

England qualified for the semi-finals by beating Jamaica 38-5, Samoa 33-0 and Australia 26-17.

They lost the last-four clash 17-12 but won bronze medal game against South Africa 21-14.

It was a good tournament for Mitchell, who scored four tries and kicked 13 conversions.

hockey tournament with a 3-2 win over South Africa in their last game.
