LES Newell took victory in the opening round of the Mota-vation Series as Oxford City dominated at Charlton-on-Otmoor.

The vet 40 runner crossed in 21mins 45secs, with clubmates Aaron Burgess and Dan Blake close behind in second and third.

Six of the club's athletes were inside the top dozen competitors as defending champions City took a commanding early lead in the team event.

Simon Fisher was fifth, while Ewan Gault and Nick Jones came ninth and 12th respectively.

In chilly and breezy conditions, Burgess led for the majority of the race.

At the two-mile mark, he was four seconds clear of Woodstock’s James Bolton, with Newell leading a group of eight runners a further eight seconds behind.

But by the end of the second loop of the 4.1-mile course, Newell was on Burgess’ heels and overtook him to win the race by eight seconds.

In the women’s event, defending senior ladies champion Jessica Webb, of Woodstock, took victory.

She led early on from Belgrave Harrier and last year’s overall series winner Sophie Carter, who is from Woodstock, while Eynsham’s Hannah Hale took third.

Kate Williamson (Eynsham) won the new vet 65 division just four days after setting a new vet 70 record at the London marathon.

Headington lead the women’s teams after the first round, but Hook Norton lie very close behind.

The next race is at Bletchingdon on Thursday, June 2.
