Danny Ray and Jon Cornish made it a White Horse Harriers one-two in the first round of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League at Ascott-under-Wychwood on Sunday.

Under 20 runner Ray won the men’s race in a time of 29mins 38secs, finishing 17 seconds ahead of clubmate Cornish, who was runner-up.

In third place was Abingdon AC’s consistent V40 runner Paul Fernandez.

The men’s team winners were Oxford City A – by a big margin.

Led by Les Newell and Maxwell Robinson – in fifth and sixth places respectively – City’s team of seven collected just 97 team points, well ahead of Cirencester A and Headington A, who were joint second on 248.

Witney Roadrunners’ Dan Blake crossed the line eighth in 30.56 ahead of tenth-placed James Bolton (Woodstock Harriers).

Rachel Masser was the top Oxfordshire finisher in the woman’s race.

The Woodstock runner was second, clocking 24.06, just 14 seconds behind winner Sophie Crumly (Newbury).

Masser’s LV35 runner Sarah Rendell, from Alchester, was third in a time 24.09.

Woodstock’s Jessica Webb was fifth, while Eynsham’s Hannah Hale was two places further back in 24.27.

The women’s team standings are decided by the first three home. Newbury lead the way on 25 points, with and Woodstock A and Cirencester A joint second on 41.

Fiona Bunn (Abingdon) won the girls' under15/17 race, while the boys race went to Will Crisp, of Swindon Harriers.

Three members of the Oxford Brookes team missed the start of the women’s race due to their car breaking down en route to Ascott.

Fabienne Armhein, Molly Fitches and Olivia Myttion were allowed to run two laps of the men’s race, almost identical to the women’s race distance so they could at least record a time.
