ATHLETICS: Diane Moore holds her own among elite field at Great North Run

Moore, who came second in the Vet 35 standings of this year’s Motavation Series earlier this month, completed the 13.1-mile route from Newcastle to South Shields in 1hr 22mins 34secs.

The race was won by defending champion Mary Keitany, from Kenya, who won the IAAF World Road Running Championships at Udine, Italy, in 2007, and came fourth in the marathon at the London 2012 Olympics.

Moore finished a respectable 15 minutes behind Keitany.

PAUL Fernandez set a course record as he won Sunday’s Finstock 10k by 49 seconds.

Abingdon AC’s Fernandez completed the two-lap course at Cornbury Park in 34mins 8secs, beating Tegs Jones of Witney Road Runners.

It was a family affair as Fernandez’s sons James and George (both under 15) were second and fourth overall in the mile fun run.

White Horse Harrier Ian Lambourn was the first Vet 50 home in the main race, finishing 12th.

Laurie Hurman, of Headington, was the first Vet 60 in 19th.

Meanwhile, Sarah Kerswell, of Woodstock Harriers, was the first woman home in 20th overall.

Lucy Harris (V35), Lisa Holland (V45), both Witney, and Kate Williamson (V55), of Eynsham Road Runners, topped their respective age groups.

Witney won both the men’s and women’s team prizes.

CLARE Norrish, of White Horse Harriers, was the leading lady at the Pangbourne 10k.

Norrish finished 19th overall in a time of 40.45, just under three minutes ahead of the next female competitor, Harriet Chettleburgh (Team Kennet).
