OXFORD City AC triple jumper Nathan Douglas endured a frustrating evening at the Hérculis Diamond League in Monaco, writes STUART WEIR.

Douglas could only manage two attempts – both no-jumps – before pulling out with a thigh injury.

The 32-year-old revealed that it was the same injury that forced him to withdraw from last month’s European Team Championships.

Douglas said: “I tried to push through.

“I really thought about trying that third round jump, but it wouldn’t have it.

“I have to keep thinking ‘bigger picture’.

“I did not want to do something devastating so I decided to protect myself and the injury hopefully is minimal.”

The event was won by Olympic champion, Christian Taylor, in 17.75m.

Douglas met the first part of the selection criteria for next month’s World Championships in Beijing by finishing second at the Sainsbury’s British Championships.

However, he has only met the qualification standard of 16.90 once and must jump it twice.

With Douglas unlikely to compete again before the team is selected, it leaves him in limbo.

He added: “Hopefully GB will pick me on the basis of the one standard I have got which they can do.

“It is in their hands. I have to wait and see”.
