Lawrence Clarke could hardly have chosen more difficult opponents for his first outdoor race of the season at the Manchester Great City Games today where he faces 2012 Olympic champion Aries Merritt and reigning World Champion, David Oliver, writes STUART WEIR.

However, it should not be forgotten the Oxfordshire hurdler beat Aries Merritt twice in one afternoon over 60m at the Sainsbury’s Grand Prix at Birmingham in February.

“It is a very stacked race with the World No 1 indoors, the World champion and the Olympic Champion,” said Clarke.

“I am just looking to run a consistent race and get the first one out of the way.

“I love these city races – my favourite race in the world.

“It is so unusual having the crowd so close on both sides of you. And I won here last year – so fond memories”.

Other members of the family have also been competing this week. Lawrence’s sister, Theodora, stood for the Conservatives in Bristol East on Thursday, finishing second as Labour held the seat. His uncle, Jacob Rees-Mogg, increased his majority in North East Somerset.

The main attraction of the City Games is Jess Ennis-Hill’s returns to action after the birth of her son, Reggie, last year. She runs in the 100m hurdles.

Clarke’s race is live on BBC 1 at 2.35pm, followed by Ennis's race.
