LAWRENCE Clarke finished second in the men’s 110m hurdles final at the Sainsbury's British Championships in Birmingham – after seeing his chance of glory ended by a bad stumble midway through the race.

The Oxfordshire athlete, who is from Christmas Common, near Watlington, was starting to close in on leader William Sharman.

But he hit the sixth hurdle hard and lost all momentum – with it any chance of winning – but recovered well to hang onto second place in a time of 13.61secs.

Sharman crossed the line in 13.18 to take victory.

Afterwards, Clarke tweeted: “Somehow managed to stay standing in that final. Proud to make selection for Euros and Commonwealths.”

Clarke eased to victory in his heat earlier in the day, posting 13.42.

Oxfordshire’s two 100m athletes both recorded personal best times, but failed to reach the final.

Banbury Harriers’ Kyle Ennis came through the first round of heats in a new best time of 10.78 to finish third.

He then improved this time even further in the semi-finals, posting 10.60, but this was only good enough for seventh place which saw him exit the competition.

Radley’s Ramone Smith crossed the line in 10.55 to finish second in his heats and book a place in the semi-finals.

There, he set a new best of 10.35 which earned fourth place, but this was again not enough to go through to the final.

Oxford Brookes University student Dan Studley came ninth in his heat of the 1,500m, finishing in 3mins 51.80secs.

Radley’s Carolyn Plateau was seventh in her heat of the women’s 800m in 2.06.51.

Emma O’Hara, also from Radley, threw 55.74m in the hammer to finish 11th.

Oxford City’s Nathan Douglas did not compete in the triple jump.
