FREDDIE Curtis saw off younger brother Redford to take gold at the England Under 20/23 Championships in Bedford.

The javelin throwing siblings, from Hardwick, near Bicester, finished first and second in the under 20 event.

Freddie, 19, improved on his second place in 2013 to take victory in 64.18m – although the throw was 5m short of his best.

Redford, 17, who like Freddie competes for the Marshall Milton Keynes club, landed a personal best effort of 59.07m to take second from Bedford & County’s Jack Swain (58.54).

The same championships saw Oxford Brookes University student Dan Studley and Radley’s Emma O’Hara sec-ure second places.

Studley took silver in the under 23 1,500m in a time of 3mins 51.67secs, with winner Will Paulson (Stroud) clocking 3.51.33.

Radley’s Stuart Ferguson finished tenth in 3.56.34.

“The race was slow and tactical to the bell where I ran a 56-second last lap to finish 0.34 seconds off the winner,” said Studley.

“After finishing eighth (2012) and ninth (2013) in the last two years in the age group, it was great to finish my time as an under 23 on the track with my first ever age group national medal.

“I now have the British Senior Championships next weekend to finish off my season.”

Hammer thrower O’Hara threw 58.00m for second place in the under 20 event, just 13cm behind winner Kimberley Reed, who will represent Britain at the World Junior Championships.

O’Hara set a best of 58.98m earlier this at the Penn Relays in Pennsylvania, where she is studying at Saint Francis University.

Another Radley athlete, Lois Waknell, finished last in her under 20 100m heat, clocking 12.61secs.
