Oxford City enjoyed a brace of top-30 finishes in the English National Road Relay Championships at Sutton Park.

City’s ladies, for whom Olympic athlete Hannah England led the way, came 17th in their six-stage event, while their men were 30th in the 12-stage competition.

England, the 2011 world 1,500m silver medallist, recorded Oxford’s fastest split for the 2.69-mile circuit with a 14mins 55secs clocking on leg two.

City were fifth at that stage, with Melissa Hawtin having ran 15.05 on leg one.

Their combined time was 1hr 41mins 10secs, while winners Aldershot, Farnham & District recorded 1.27.00.

In the men’s race, Darrell Bellinger (27.05) recorded Oxford’s fastest split over the 5.08m ‘long’ leg as he continued his comeback from injury.

Debutant Heath Bampton clocked City’s quickest ‘short’ leg, recording 14.49 for the 2.69-mile route.

Their combined time was 4.17.29, with Leeds City victorious in 3.50.41.

Oxford Brookes University student Dan Studley was the fastest Oxfordshire athlete on show with a 24.47 long leg, the ninth best of the day, that helped Bristol & West to 12th.

Steve Naylor, from Cassington, ran a 25.42 long leg as Bedford & County came seventh.

Jonny Cornish, from Wantage, helped Hercules Wimbledon finish 26th with a 14.21 short leg before coming seventh in the following day’s White Horse Half Marathon.
