ANGLING: Clean sweep for Gunsmiths in opener
11:00am Saturday 13th October 2012 in Sport
The Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths team made it a 1-2-3 in the first round of the Angling Trust Oxford Winter League, fished by five teams of eight on a swollen Thames at Abingdon and Clifton Hampden.
With plenty of pace and colour in the water, the pegs that were steadier were the prime draws.
Paul Glenfield drew a very steady swim at Abingdon and made the most of it with a net of quality roach and skimmers on the pole at 13m with maggot over groundbait for a winning 19lbs 12oz.
Teammate Carl Eland was pegged at the bottom end of Abingdon below the marina and caught quality roach, plus one bream on the pole, feeder and worm for 14.3.0 and second.
Tom Hobbs was third with 13.3.0 from the middle of the Abingdon stretch, an all-roach bag on pole and maggot.
Team-wise, Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths triumphed with 35 points, followed by Sensas A4 with 26 and Isis with 24.
Richard Rosinski (Sensas A4) and Henry Golas (Isis) also got in to double figures for fourth and fifth places.
Tackley Estates AC were on a quieter venue of the Oxford Canal at Shipton for their Dave Broome Trophy, where eight fished.
John Spencer caught skimmers on bread and the pole for a winning 8.13.0.
Second-placed Anthony Alder had some nice roach up to 1.10.0 on pole and maggot for 5.9.0, while Stephen Malone caught skimmers and roach on pole and maggot for 3.4.0.
