FOOTBALL: Didcot just one game from FA Cup first round
10:10am Monday 8th October 2012 in Sport
DIDCOT Town made history by reaching the fourth qualifying round for the first time after Morgan Will-iams’s goal gave them a superb victory overMaidnhead United at Loop Meadow on Saturday.
Gary Elkins’s side now stand just one win away from a potentially glamorous tie against Football League opposition in the first round.
Didcot’s success against their Blue Square Bet North opponents, placed 53 places above them in the non-league pyramid, was no fluke.
The visitors were pressed and harried by their determined hosts throughout the game. The Railwaymen did have to defend doggedly for the last 25 minutes, but they were resolute until a late sending -off for the Magpies took the sting out of the tie.
Morgan Williams was a threat throughout with his pacy runs down the left setting up chances for Lance Williams and James Clark.
For Maidehead, Leigh Hendy went close while Reece Tison-Lascaris had an effort ruled out for offside.
Five minutes before half-time Morgan Williams scored the decisive goal.
Maidenhead’s defence was once more caught flat-footed by his speed, and the winger thrashed the ball in off the underside of the crossbar.
The one player who was causing consistent discomfort to Didcot’s backline was striker Alex Wall.
But he finished weakly from a good chance early in the second half.
Lee Barney and Martel Powell both missed the target and Wall was denied by Didcot keeper Marcos Belloli as Maidenhead became more desperate.
Their frustration boiled over ten minutes from time.
Didcot, not surprisingly, were eating up the clock as they lined up a free-kick and Daniel Brown took exception, the Magpies captain red carded for continual dissent.
The sending-off seemed to deflate Maidenhead.
With a man advantage, the Railwaymen were able to finish the game in relative comfort and record a magnificent victory and now look forward to their first appearance in today’s fourth-round draw.
Didcot Tn: Belloli, Elkins, Heapy, Osborne-Ricketts, Thomas, Henderson, Tappin, L Williams; Clark; Bowles (Hay-sham 67), M Williams. Attendance: 301.
