RUGBY UNION: Nicholl enjoys mixed day
10:30am Tuesday 2nd October 2012 in Sport
Guy Nicholl
Southern Counties North
GUY Nicholl scored two of Grove’s six tries and was sin-binned in a 37-6 victory at Tadley.
Wing Nicholl bagged Grove’s first and last scores, but was yellow-carded late on for retaliation against a Tadley player, who was also binned.
Nicholl’s first try came on five minutes, then he set up centre Nick Sevier for No 2, the latter converting.
Tadley, who battled hard throughout, replied with two penalties.
Grove had lock Lee Wright yellow-carded, but wing Harry Carr, hooker Jimmy Wallbridge, fly half Dave Maryon and Nicholl all crossed over.
Scrum half Owen Gustafson kicked a penalty and converted Nicholl’s second try.
Alchester made it three wins from three matches when they beat Buckingham 21-17 in the first competitive game at their new Fritwell home.
Joe McEneaney, Adam White and Matt Dye scored tries, while Tom Miles converted all three.
Alchester led 21-3 and held on despite Buckingham’s fightback.
Robin Tyreman was sin-binned for a high tackle on Buckingham’s ex-Alchester man Steve Miller, while Garrick Kimber also saw yellow.
Wallingford blew an 18-11 lead in the final minute as they drew 18-18 at home to Aylesbury, but collected their first points of the campaign.
Prop Antony Marris raced in for Wallingford’s opening try, but Aylesbury hit back with a penalty from James Woodfall.
Matt Dawes landed a three-pointer to give Wallingford an 8-3 lead at the break.
Captain Gary Horne crashed over for Aylesbury, but Phil Dawes’s try put the hosts 13-8 up.
Ben Selwood grabbed Wallingford’s third try, while Woodfall’s penalty gave the visitors hope.
Kriss Hardman crashed over and Woodfall converted to seal a dramatic draw.
