Oxford City’s Jamie Cook gets up high to head goalwards during Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat by Guiseley at Court Place Farm
Oxford City’s four-match unbeaten run in Blue Square Bet North came to an end at the hands of fellow high-fliers Guiseley at Court Place Farm on Saturday.
The second-placed visitors took advantage of some hesitant defending by City to claim a well-deserved victory.
The hosts, who saw Chris Willmott return after suspension and gave Jacob Walcott his debut, were looking to bounce back from last week’s FA Cup exit at Yate.
However, they went behind early on after failing to defend a corner and Wayne Brooksby fired in from close range after Warren Carter had palmed away Jack Rea’s shot.
Despite the setback, City forced their way back into the game, with Steve Basham heading over after good work from Jack Mills and Walcott.
Mills was proving to be City’s most potent attacker and it was from one of his crosses that his side should have levelled, but Willmott headed over.
James Walshaw should then have doubled Guiseley’s lead but blazed over.
For City, Jamie Cook had a shot charged down for City before Drench saved a Mills free-kick as Mike Ford’s side finished strongly.
After the break, City tried to get back into the contest, but Darren Pond’s header from Cook’s cross was easily gathered.
Pond then had a shot blocked before substitute Felipe Barcelos saw his effort scrambled away.
But as City pressed forward, Guiseley scored their second, substitute Josh Wilson heading in an Andy Holdsworth free-kick in off the far post.
Cook had a shot saved, but that was as close as City got.
And to rub salt into their wounds, sub Nicky Boshell smashed home Brooksby’s raking pass at the far post in injury-time to make it 3-0.
Oxford City: Carter, Mills, Stonehouse, Malone, Gunn, Willmott, Cook, Pond, Basham (Sharif 53), Walcott (Barcelos 67), Benjamin (Ballard 67). Sub not used: Learoyd.
Attendance: 303.
