GREYHOUNDS: It's one man and his dog at Oxford

OXFORD Stadium have taken on a new trainer, who has only one hound to grade – now that’s what I would call desperate!

However, it transpires that Tony Loveridge, who has had runners at Sandy Lane in open events, hopes that he will have a track base where he will be able to build his kennel strength to around 15 hounds in total.

Things do appear to be on the up, though, with a further two trainers expressing a desire in joining the Cowley circuit.

One of them, who is an established big-race handler, is seeking to become dual-attached and has facilities for up to 50 hounds.

The other, a Droylsden-based trainer, has experience of Perry Barr, Doncaster and Sheffield.

Swift action is required though, as long-serving trainer Terry Atkins quits Sandy Lane to join Swindon next month.

With the future of Oxford Stadium still up in the air, speculation is rife that Honda are showing interest in the Swindon site.

If both go belly-up, it will leave the Thames Valley without a speedway or greyhound track for the first time in more than 70 years.
