Kennington’s Pauline Withey won the All England Ladies singles at Reading, writes PETE EWINS.
She took the title by a point after winning four of her five games.
Withey posted 2-0 wins over Dawn Jordon (Bucks), Jamie McCoy (Kent), Debs Pearce (Surrey) and Myra Hawkins (Berkshire) 2-0, and although she lost on aggregate to Jan Bifhel (Sussex), it was enough to capture the crown.
OXFORDSHIRE'S men’s A team won the County Championships in Reading, pipping Sussex by a single point.
Oxon beat Berkshire 5-2, Kent 4-3, Sussex B 6-1, Sussex A 4-3 and Hampshire 6-1.
Phil Collins and Keith Sheard won all five of their matches, while Mark Trafford, Steven Sheard and Leon Beer triumphed in four of their five.
OXFORD A overcame Ports-mouth 6-4 on aggregate in the Inter Area Cup final following a 4-1 win in the home leg.
Trailing 3-2 from the away leg, Steven Sheard (11,790) and Trafford (11,010) soon put Oxford 4-3 up.
Tony Woolvin levelled, before Alan Oliver (3,900) and skipper Kevin Godfrey (9,080) triumphed to clinch the match 6-4 on aggregate, and a place against Wallingford B or Reading A in the final.
MARLBOROUGH Club started their season in Section 2 of the Johnsons Buildbase Oxford League with a 4-1 win at home to Headington Conservative Club.
They lost the opening game when Sid Ponting beat Pete Rose 3,710-2,910, but recovered well to take the next four through Chris Iagoe (5,130), Chris Bateman (6,730), Ian Major and Arthur McIntyre, who top-scored with 7,320.
Dolphin beat Gladiators B 3-2 at home. Kirsty Jarvis (5,110), Darren Phillips and Melissa Standbridge were Dolphin’s winners, with Grant Johnson (3,590) and Jenny Webb replying.
