BOWLS: Morbeys shows Champions touch

Banbury Central’s Graham Morbey was crowned the Oxfordshire Champion of Champions with a 21-16 win over West Witney’s Kevin Alder in the final at Oxford City & County.

Morbey led 9-2 after six ends and 14-7 at ten only for Alder to storm back for a 16-15 lead after 15.

However, the Witney man’s hopes of capturing the crown proved short-lived as Morbey unleashed a four and two over the next two ends.

In the semi-finals, Morbey defeated Woodstock’s Brian Clarke 21-18.

Morbey led 13-4 after 11 ends, but Clarke picked up nine shots over the next five to level the match.

The Banbury man edged ahead again though to secure victory after 25 ends.

Alder, meanwhile, held on for a 21-16 win against Banbury Borough’s Keith Holloway, having been 13-5 and 18-9 in front.

Morbey will now represent Oxfordshire in the National Champion of Champions Singles at Worthing next August.
