ANGLING: Thompson's cracker

PERSISTENCE paid off for angler Alan Thompson who caught this 72lb 4oz sturgeon from Oakwood Predator Lake in Thetford.

Thompson (49), who is Oxford-born and bred, and a group of friends made a two-day trip to Norfolk.

But after a friutless first night, he moved into a recently-vacated swim and fished a small piece of mackerel very close to the bank.

And it paid off as he landed this whopper.

He said: “At 12.30am I had a terrific bite which took 30 yards of line and after what seemed like an eternity, but what was only ten minutes or so we managed to play this sturgeon to the net.”

After a few photos were taken the sturgeon was rehoused in the ornamental lake.
