FOOTBALL: City aces climb to fourth spot

OXFORD City climbed to fourth in Blue Square Bet North after a 2-0 home victory over Corby Town last night.

City scored early in each half through Andy Gunn and Darren Pond to clinch the spoils, while their keeper, Warren Carter, had to make some great saves.

The hosts took the lead on eight minutes when Chris Willmott headed on Jack Mills’s free-kick and Gunn nodded in.

Corby played their part in an open and pacy game and were unlucky not to score when Sam Ives smashed a shot against the crossbar.

Then Carter made a great block to deny Ryan Semple.

City made it 2-0 on 47 minutes via a counter-attack as Steve Basham’s precise pass allowed Pond space to fire home.

Felipe Barcelos could have made it 3-0, but his effort was smothered by Paul Walker in the Corby goal.

Oxford City: Carter, Mills, Gunn, Wilmott, Stonehouse, Cook (Ballard), Malone, Pond, Benjamin (Isaac), Basham (Barcelos), Shariff. Subs not used: Learoyd, Walcott.
