HOCKEY: Hawks women suffer opening league defeat
5:20pm Tuesday 18th September 2012 in Sport
Oxford Hawks made a frustrating start to their Investec Women’s League Conference East campaign with a 2-1 home defeat by Harleston Magpies.
A goal from Alexa Thomas, who coolly tipped the ball passed the Magpies keeper, made it 1-1 at half-time.
Magpies' forwards made the most of their chances as Hawks gave away cheap possession all over the pitch.
The visitors scored the winning goal in the second half, snapping up a rebound shot.
Some solid defending prevented Hawks applying enough pressure to secure a draw.
Meanwhile Oxford Hawks men were in six-hitting form in two friendlies over the weekend.
On Saturday, Hawks triumphed 6-3 at home to Robinsons from Bristol.
Hawks, fielding new players Andy Seilman (Wales), Chris Burden (ex-Reading) and Ric Corbett (ex-Richmond), came from behind to lead 4-1 at half-time.
This was thanks to goals from Dave Cresswell, Tom Godding and Sam Chilvers plus a ‘new rule’ own goal from a Hawks’ cross.
Both sides scored twice in the second half, Hawks’ strikes coming from Chilvers and Steve Kelly, while Godding missed a penalty flick.
Despite fielding a much-changed line-up including another new face, Will Budgell, from High Wycombe, Hawks beat Gloucester 6-0 on Sunday.
Chilvers and Ted Bennett scored braces. Selman converted a penalty flick and the scoring was completed by an own goal.
