ATHLETICS: Woodstock duo in Cotswold joy

JAMES Bolton and Sophie Carter secured a Woodstock Harriers double in the Portfolio Property Cotswold Classic ten-mile race.

Bolton was the men’s champion and Carter the ladies’ winner in the challenging event, organised by Witney Road Runners.

The race, which is also the Oxfordshire ten-mile championship, saw Bolton finish more than three minutes clear after clocking 55mins 36secs.

Carter was even more dominant in the ladies’ race, finishing in 1.02.05, more than four minutes ahead of her nearest female challenger and ninth overall.

Bolton, who was also Oxon champion, headed home Oxford City’s Aaron Burgess (58.26) and Bedford & County’s Chris Riley (58.37).

Riley was the first vet 40 home, ahead of county champion Dave Cantwell (Woodstock) and Oxford City’s John Atyeo.

County champion Carter beat Diana Davis (New Balance Boston), who clocked 1.06.12, into second, while Witney’s Nikki Smith was third lady and first vet 35 in 1.06.41.

Alchester’s Samantha Usher was the vet 35 county champion in 1.10.00, as Smith was ineligible.

Woodstock won both the men’s open and county team races, while Headington Road Runners (county) and Alchester (open) split the ladies’ prizes.
