York City 3 (Coulson 1, Chambers 15, McLaughlin 54) Oxford United 1 (McLaughlin og 23)

A POOR defensive display saw Oxford United's 100 per cent start to the season go out the window with a defeat away to York City.

The visitors were behind in the opening minute, when Michael Coulson pounced on an error from Ryan Clarke.

Deane Smalley had a penalty saved before more ragged defending from the U's allowed Ashley Chambers to make it 2-0.

A Patrick McLaughlin own goal brought United, who looked dangerous going forward, back into the game midway through the first half.

But the midfielder struck early in the second half to restore the two-goal cushion, which proved decisive.

Smalley and Jake Forster-Caskey returned to the side after missing the midweek defeat at Leeds United through injury. James Constable and Sean McGinty made way.

The U's had not conceded from open play in the league before the game, but within 17 seconds they were behind.

A mix-up in the visitors' midfield gave Patrick McLaughlin room and his shot was spilled by Ryan Clarke. It fell to Chambers, who unselfishly squared for Coulson to tap in.

It began a breathless first half littered by defensive mistakes.

United looked rattled, but gave themselves a chance to level on 11 minutes.

Sean Rigg had a shot deflected on to the crossbar and when the ball came out, Smalley's shot hit Charlie Taylor's hand.

The referee awarded a penalty, but Michael Ingham kept out Smalley's low spot kick.

York punished the miss by doubling their lead on the quarter hour mark.

Chambers cut in from the left flank and scythed through a statuesque United back four, swapping passes with McLaughlin to bury a shot past Clarke.

United roared back to reduce the deficit just eight minutes later, when Adam Chapman's corner was headed in for an own goal by McLaughlin.

The visitors still looked vulnerable at the back, but had the better chances up to half time.

Their best chance for an equaliser came with a thrilling move ten minutes before the break.

Rigg played a one-two with Tony Capaldi and crossed low for Smalley, who made good contact with his shot but Ingham kept it out.

More goals seemed inevitable after the interval and it took just nine minutes for the score to change again.

Raynes mis-controlled a high ball in his own half, allowing York to pounce and Chambers set up McLaughlin to tuck a first-time shot past Clarke.

Tom Craddock and James Constable were brought on from the bench in an effort to find a way back into the game.

The latter had a glorious chance nine minutes from time, when the ball was flicked over the defence, but the striker steered a volley wide of the post.

It was the final clear chance of the game and York saw out the final minutes without much drama to end United's perfect start to the season.

It was inevitable, we had to play so badly against the team we beat to get promoted. We still can't take our chances in front of goal. Our defence were asleep today. We can only hope we learn from this poor display.

bubbles burst already - prepare for Wilder's cliche ridden excuses. Have to get over this poor display quickly or we'll just repeat all the mistakes of last year. I know it's early days but I really fear Wilder's inability to address things when plan A falls over. I expect 4pts at least from Burton&Exeter games we can't go on a poor run this early after such a good start. And Constable? Seriously get rid and use the money for better defenders.

wasn't at game but saw goals on Sky - laughable errors from a defence that leaked 1 goal in 3 games and now 6 in 2 (yes I know Leeds are a good side). This has to be put right now not in 10-12 games time when we're mid table and Wilder is blaming players, weather, bad luck&refs. I have a bad feeling about next few games.

We may be small but we can pack a punch when we need to as you saw today! we arnt a scum or "mickey mouse" town that fight you all after the game like Luton and we welcome everyone and York is a great night (and day out) you should come down sometime and see this great town next game when we beat you again ;)

Think you'll find that jibe was aimed at Oxford. Yellowhoods is a troll looking to get a bite out of anyone who will give him the time of day. After Wembley 2010, there was no hostility between York & Oxford. The York fans were obviously disappointed to lose, but wished us well on our return to the Football League. Many Oxford fans hoped you would get your chance again and that your return would swiftly follow. As it happens, you only had to wait a year and it came against the scum of Luton made it all the more sweeter.

Welcome back to where you belong. York is a fantastic city, a great club and we wish you well for the season.

After Swindons result today things dont seem so bad. Well done York gave us a good wake up call. After Di Canios antics today there might be a decent keeper a available, any thoughts anyone?...

looks like weds game will be between two sides trying to redeem them selves after disastrous defensive displays so it could be very interesting , lets hope that the yellows come out on top again.

We need a new keeper at the club that is going to push clarke. Get Turley back at the club. He is the best keeper we have had is years. Wayne brown won't push Clarke for a place now he is coaching. Also need another man in the middle. Heslop has looked shocking this season. He can't run, can't pass and isn't shooting anymore! Roll on a fit Peter Leven to join cox and JF-C in the middle!

Dick Anio is the only thing that made me laugh this weekend - his public humiliation of a player is a sign of his immaturity and his sporadic outbursts indicate an inability to manage diplomatically. Swindon deserve him.
