BOWLS: Cox bid ends in last-16 defeat

Banbury Central’s Mo Cox reached the last 16 in the Women’s National Two Wood Singles Championship at Leamington before going out 17-12 to Felixstowe & Suffolk’s Katherine Rednall.

Cox had beaten Taunton Deane’s Kirsty Hembrow 15-11 in the first round, before defeating Purton’s Alison Fail 17-11 in round two.

Oxford City & County’s Jacky Gray knocked out Bolton’s Margaret Gill 15-10 in the preliminary round, but then fell 14-9 to Cheryl Colby (Burghfield, Berkshire).

The City & County quartet of Myra Lewis , Donna Knight, Gail Gilkes and Katherine Hawes went out 21-14 to Kirsty Richards, Pat Humpage, Ruth Phillips and Sandra Smith (Bournville, Warwickshire) in the fours second round.

They had opened up with a 23-9 demolition of Poole Park’s Anne Walford, Wendy Hardy, Julie Leake and Penny Cresswell.

Banbury Central’s Carole Galletly, Helen Young, Stella Amos and Caroline Campion went out 21-14 to Cleethorpes’ Tracy Dent, Kirsty Cox, Chris Gowshall and Amy Gowshall in round one.

WATLINGTON teenagers Claire Soden and Emma Gilkes battled their way through to the Gwen Steele Unbadged Singles semi-finals at Oxford City & County.

Soden, 13, beat Headington’s Pat Blackford in the quarter-finals, while Gilkes, 18, defeated Banbury Chestnuts’ Chris Purnell.

Soden will now face Carterton’s Gill Muir and Gilkes will take on Shiplake’s Helen Robinson on finals weekend of September 1 and 2 at Oxford City & County.

OOXFORDSHIRE Ladies were defeated 117-97 by Surrey in a friendly at Southey.
