BOWLS: Campion lands last-gasp victory

Les Campion snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a superb last bowl to give Banbury Central a 3.5-2.5 win over Division 1 leaders Carterton in the Oxford & District League, sponsored by Yarnton Nurseries.

Campion was the only winning skip for Central, although his son, Will, secured a 16-16 draw in their 71-68 success.

With champions Headington A without a game, Oxford City & County A went second with a 5-1 home win over Kidlington.

Alan Ley led the way with a 25-9 win in the 92-64 victory.

Shiplake bounced back from their 6-0 drubbing by Carterton with a 5-1 home victory over Banbury Chestnuts.

Skips Barrie Evans, Jim Bland and Barry Lambourne were to the fore in a 83-60 scoreline.

Division 2 leaders West Witney notched up their third straight success with a resounding 5.5-0.5 home victory over Oxford City & County B.

Paul Skidmore recorded the night’s biggest individual win with a massive 38-4 triumph over Nigel Satchell as West Witney stormed home 104-52.

Gordon Hooker’s 25-8 win was not enough to save Watlington from a 5-1 defeat at South Oxford A.

Charlbury, under the captaincy of Dave Cooper, ran out 5-1 winners at Woodstock to go top of Division 3.
