10:30am Tuesday 24th April 2012 in Sport
DONNINGTON Community Centre B provided the major shock of the men’s seven-a-side cup matches.
The Greene King ODDA Section 3 side pulled off a stunning 4-3 home victory against Premier Division outfit Star Inn.
The tie looked to be going to form when the visitors went 1-0 up as Joe Palmer beat Lee Cox.
Star were pegged back, but wins from Sean Holly and Steve Baker made it 3-1.
But Donnington, on the verge of defeat, hit back and claimed a surprise victory, thanks to wins from William Jones, Gary Cox and Wayne Cox.
Premier League champions Windrush Social Club stayed on course for a league and cup double after winning 5-2 at Vikings Social Club A.
Red Lion recovered superbly after losing the opening match, eventually sweeping Masons Arms C aside to power through 6-1.
Cowley Workers had a similarly comfortable passage into the last eight, beating George Bar by the same scoreline.
The meeting of Section 1 champions Rose Hill Community Centre and Section 3 winners Follybridge Inn was far tighter.
Locked at 3-3 heading into the decider, the higher ranked side held their nerve to win 4-3.
The biggest win of the round came from Peachcroft Social Club, who proved too strong for Catherine Wheel A in a 7-0 thrashing.
Littlemore Rugby Club also took their place in the last eight after knocking out Golden Ball.
The quarter-finals will be played on Tuesday, May 8, at Marston British Legion (8.30pm start).
- THE ladies’ winter seven-a-side cup will take place at Donnington Community Centre on Wednesday, May 9.
Premier League champions Florence Park Community Centre A, who knocked out league runners-up Nuffield Bar, can pull off a double.
Cricketers Arms will also fancy their chances in the last four after knocking out top-flight side Blackbird Bar earlier in the competition.
- TICKETS for the ODDA winter finals on June 1 can be bought from The Three Horseshoes, Old Marston, and league secretary Jim Baxendale, who can be contacted on 01865 430054.
