MOTORSPORT: Liquorish ends five-year wait
10:20am Saturday 14th April 2012 in Sport
Steven Liquorish, from Wantage, got his 2012 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge GB season off to a flying start with victory at Snetterton over the Easter weekend.
It was just reward after patiently waiting five years for his first victory at the circuit.
There were two 25-minute races and Liquorish, pictured left, took top spot in the first.
He made a rocket start to shoot straight into a handy lead, while chief rival James Birch didn’t fare so well.
Then, just as he started to chase after Liquorish, Birch spun at Nelson and clipped the barriers. With damage to a radiator, he was forced into the pits and retired.
“I had one of the best starts I’ve ever made,” said a jubilant Liquorish.
“I really got my head down in the early laps.”
His win completed a clean sweep for Team Parker Racing on the podium, with Justin Sherwood and Neil Houston finishing second and third respectively.
John Ferguson set the fastest lap in 96.60mph before spinning.
Sunday’s race was full of incident and drama as light rain at the start made conditions really challenging for the slick-shod field.
Liquorish again left Birch in his wake before falling foul of the conditions and going into a high-speed spin.
He recovered to finish fourth behind winner Birch.
Liquorish, who is also backed by Graham Watches, recovered to fourth.
The next rounds are at Rockingham on May 19-20.
