An astonisihing collapse hastened Shipton-under-Wychwood’s passage into the npower Village Cup quarter-finals last night.
Hosts Wembdon were already set for defeat when they lost their last six wickets for six runs to hand Shipton a 133-run victory.
Shipton will now host threetimes champions Troon, from Cornwall, in the quarter-finals on August 1.
Four wickets fell in one dramatic over from Shipton captain Paul Hemming, who could scarcely believe he had claimed a ‘five-for’.
Somerset champions Wembdon may have hit self-destruct in spectacular style, but they faced a massive challenge to overhaul Shipton’s impressive 272-5.
Much of this was due to Steve Bates’s 93, which came after his 88 in the previous round, while Jason Hunt bludgeoned 70 off 41 balls.
Shipton were inserted after losing the toss, but had intended to bat anyway.
They lost Charlie Brain for 11 and were 48-2 after Andy Hemming was bowled.
But Tim Senior hit his first two balls for four as he and Bates pressed the accelerator around halfway.
They had put on 115 before Senior holed out to mid-wicket.
As they had done in the previous round, Bates and Hunt cut loose to take the game away from Wembdon.
Shipton scored 62 runs off the final five overs, which took them to 272-5 – the same total they made in the previous round and no mean feat considering the big boundaries.
Hunt’s innings featured four sixes before he was caught off the final delivery of the innings.
Bates had been caught behind on 93 when he looked set to score a century, but had played a vital role for the second match running.
Seamer John Brockwell was the pick of Wembdon’s attack with three wickets, but they lacked any real control in the spin department.
Wembdon also did not help their cause with dropped catches – twice in Bates’s favour and once to Hunt, which left fielder Brendan Pope nursing a sore nose and a headache.
Wembdon’s reply started badly when Rich Gower chopped on to Chris Panter in the second over.
Dan Bingham and Harry Lee put on 63 for the second wicket before the former fell to a fine running catch from Craig Lambert.
Dangerman Brockwell followed in Miller’s next over and Wembdon were 77-3 at the drinks break.
Lee fell soon after the resumption, but Wembdon reached 133-4 with some solid batting and three sixes from Rob Dickins.
Victory was out of sight as spinners Shaun Miller and Hunt turned in solid spells.
Then came the collapse.
First, Paul Hemming had Dickins stumped, then the unlucky Brendan Pope was run out off his first ball.
Tom Lott and Carwyn Jenkins fell in successive deliveries to leave Hemming on a hat-trick.
His did not achieve this, but it was not long before batsmen Richard Eckley and Pete Gliddon completed his surprise starring role.
Meanwhile, Troon, who won the title three times in the 1970s, overcame Lewdown by 96 runs yesterday.
