Adam gives U's double boost

Oxford United midfielder Adam Murray is confident he will be ready for the Blue Square Premier kick-off next month following a troublesome foot injury.

And last season’s club captain added that he has also confirmed that he has no intention of leaving the U’s.

It was thought that the Birmingham-born play-maker would have an operation in the summer after tearing the ligament, but a scan revealed he would not need to go under the knife.

Coupled with various rumours of Murray wanted to move closer to home in Derby, at one stage it looked unlikely that he would be in United’s starting line-up for their opening game of the season in August.

But the news that he is both getting back to full fitness, and desperate to stay with Oxford is a huge boost to United supporters.

“I had a steroid injection in the foot at the end of the season and I was going to have an operation,” he said.

“But I was told it could make it worse.

“It’s coming on well and hopefully I should be playing again in a few more weeks. But I don’t want to rush back even if it takes a bit longer.

“I did a run last Friday and I got a bit of a reaction, but I’ll give it another blast.

“My main aim is to be ready for our tour to Scotland.

“It’s been very frustraing sitting on the sidelines watching everybody else training, while I have been riding a bike to keep my general fitness up.

“But everything is all looking positive and I can’t wait for the season to start.”

Murray said he was looking to move his family down to the area as soon as possible ending rumours that he wanted to find a club nearer to home.

“I am happy to be here,” he said.

“There were rumours, but I told the gaffer from day one that I don’t want to go anywhere else. I love it here – the passion of the club and fans.”

  • FORMER U’s midfielder Joe Burnell, released from his Oxford contract last week, has joined League One side Exeter.
  • UNITED’S game at Tamworth has been moved from Saturday, March 20 to Sunday, March 21 (3pm) with local police covering Stoke v Tottenham game that day.

However, if the Premier League is moved to accomodate television, United’s game could be switched back.

  • OXFORD hold their Open Day today, where thousands of fans are expected to turn out.
